Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art presents artist-in-residence
Gerry Garrett

KELOWNA (BC) – Kelowna resident Gerry Garrett has been invited to
participate as artist-in-residence this February at the Alternator
Gallery for Contemporary Art.

Garrett was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He graduated from the
University of Alberta with degrees in microbiology and medicine and has
practiced family medicine in northern B.C. and in the Okanagan.

During his month long residency Garrett will explore similarities
between mobile genetic elements and geodesic structures, two seemingly
divergent areas, brought together through his background in science and
renewed interest in art.

Garrett’s interest was sparked during his undergraduate degree.
“Studying those little suckers tough structural coats got me interested
in the geodesic domes made famous by R. Buckminster Fuller.”

Mobile genetic elements can sometimes form geodesic structures and often
perform useful functions rather than simply cause disease. Studies have
shown upwards of 40% of the genetic code in all species is actually
composed of mobile virus-like genetic elements. The line between viruses
and mobile genetic elements seems blurred.

Using recycled wood, Garrett will create architectural forms that will
spread out of the studio structure, while incorporating elements from
the "host" gallery. They will travel into the outside world, perhaps
replicating their memes.

The Alternator invites the public to visit Garrett in the Alternator’s
Studio 111 located in the Rotary Centre for the Arts.

The Alternator Gallery offers member artists the opportunity to
participate in a one-month residency in Studio 111 in the Rotary Centre
for the Arts, the facility that houses the Alternator Gallery in
Kelowna's downtown cultural district located at 103-421 Cawston Avenue.

For more information on the Alternator’s activities, visit the gallery
from 11 to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday or go to www.alternatorgallery.com.
