The Spirit of Haida Gwaii Concert
Why is The Vancouver Sun calling this the "Must See performance of
2008"? February 1 & 2, 2008
After a preshow at the soon-to-open Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast
Art, the audience moves to Christ Church Cathedral. There, the Spirit
of Haida Gwaii Concert begins with a traditional Coast Salish welcome
and dance before Haida leaders Guujaaw (pictured, right) and Terri-Lynn
Williams-Davidson perform their powerful and moving Haida songs. If you
have not heard these great Haida artists sing, this is a special treat.
Soprano Melody Mercredi and baritone Clarence Logan, are two rising
stars in the opera world. They will sing the lead roles in the The
Spirit of Haida Gwaiioratorio composed by Bruce Ruddell, based on the
prose poem by the iconic Haida-Canadian, Bill Reid (1920 - 1998) whose
monumental bronze sculpture is featured on the Canadian
$20 bill.
"We are delighted to reunite Guujaaw and many of the original
performers from The Spirit Concert, but we are so pleased to have
First Nations singers in the lead roles - a first for this oratorio,"
said Donna Wong Juliani, the event's producer.

Melody Mercredi and Clarence Logan, the choir of Christ Church Cathedral
and a full live orchestra under the direction of Rupert Lang.
