The Kamloops Art Gallery is proud to announce another community art
exhibition in the BMO Open Gallery. *Renewing our Spirit: Ktunaxa -
Secwepemc Aboriginal Youth Art Exchange *is on from January 26 to March
2, 2008.
*The idea for /Renewing our Spirit/ germinated in August 2007,
when Chris Bose from the Secwepemc Cultural Education Society and
Marisa Phillips from Ktunaxa First Nations met at an Arts Mapping
Conference. Bose and Phillips decided to collaborate on a project
reflecting the long history between the Secwepemc in Kamloops and
the Ktunaxa in Cranbrook. In the past, as with other neighboring
tribes, the two nations would traditionally meet to trade goods,
socialize, and exchange information. During the mid-1800s, some
Secwepemc people permanently moved to the Ktunaxa territory and
became members of the Ktunaxa. Today, exchange still occurs
between the two nations in different ways. This collaborative
exhibition continues the tradition in contemporary form, bringing
together the art work of several young artists from traditional
Secwepemc and Ktunaxa territories. *
Admission to this exhibition is free and is open to the public whenever
the building is open.
