*High and Dry: The Struggle for Ladner Harbour *

* *

*/Delta, BC/** *-- Deposits of sediment and silt have always been a
problem for Ladner Harbour's shallow entrance. Since the latter half of
the 1800s, this old deep water channel coursing by Ladner's Landing and
Port Guichon was routinely threatened with sediment. Fishermen, the
Board of Trade and ferry passengers routinely called for dredging in
fear that the harbour would eventually be left high and dry.

The Delta Museum and Archives' exhibit /"High and Dry: the struggle for
Ladner Harbour 1880 to 2000" /traces the natural and engineered changes
to Ladner's waterfront, from the port's hey day to its recent
revitalization.

Ladner's position at the junction of the Fraser River and Chillukthan
Slough, its deep water frontage and strategic location between Victoria
and New Westminster made it Delta's first major port and urban center.
In 1875, Ladner Harbour's first wharf was built by the federal
government, thereby highlighting its importance as a transit point and
destination.

The Fraser River, including the Ladner Channel, was dredged for the
first time in 1880 by a clam shell type dredge. In the past, Ladner
Reach was regularly dredged, often annually, by federal Public Works.
The river was expected to carry dredged piles of sand and mud out to
sea, but the dredging crew inevitably found themselves working in the
channel the following season. The harbour's entrance, now 7 to 8 feet
deep at low tide, was last dredged in 2000 at a cost of $250,000 and the
inner harbour in 1987. Tides bring mud into the harbour at a slow but
inexorable rate -- and so the struggle continues!

On display at the Delta Museum and Archives' temporary gallery, July 15
to December 21, 2008, this exhibit is a chronological compilation of
photographs, maps, reports, records and newspaper clippings that looks
at the history that shaped the development of the harbour and how the
role the harbour has played has changed over the years.

Accompanying the exhibit is a carefully crafted and detailed model,
built by volunteer Ken Atkey. Based on original research, the model is
an overview of the wharf that once moored ships such as the New Delta
ferry and the SS Transfer sternwheeler.

/Established in 1969, the Delta Museum and Archives is a not-for-profit
society whose mission is to capture, research and preserve stories,

generations.///
