on-campus heritage courses offered at the University of Victoria!
HA 487A - Heritage Resource Management (1.5 units)
Mondays, September 8 to December 1, 2008, 5 to 8 pm in the Fine
Arts Building, Room 103, University of Victoria
Historic places - buildings, structures, landscapes, historic districts and
other places of heritage value -are integral to our understanding of the
unique character of our communities and to building our sense of
place. By conserving and celebrating these places, we contribute to
the vitality and sustainability of our communities.
This course develops your understanding of heritage resources and
their value, the challenges associated with their conservation, and
approaches that support their preservation and presentation. Topics
include principles of heritage conservation, identification of heritage
value and significance, inventory and documentation, organizational
and legal frameworks for conservation, heritage planning,
sustainability, approaches to revitalization and cultural
tourism.
HA 487B - Heritage Resource Conservation (1.5 units)
Mondays, January 5 to March 30, 2009, 5 to 8 pm in the Fine Arts
Building, Room 103, University of Victoria
Through engaging case-studies and exercises using local heritage
resources, this course explores the philosophical, ethical, and
practical aspects of physical conservation as they apply to the
management of heritage resources in the world today. Topics include
the principles and history of heritage conservation, the role of
conservation in the management of heritage resources, levels of
intervention including preservation, restoration, rehabilitation and
reconstruction, and the conservation process.
Instructors: Alastair Kerr and Richard Linzey
Alastair Kerr is an expert in heritage planning and historic resource
evaluation, and is a leading theorist in heritage conservation in
Canada. He holds a BA and a MA in art and architectural history from
the University of Victoria. For the past thirty- five years Alastair
has worked for the British Columbia Heritage Branch where he is
currently the Manager of Heritage Programs. Alastair has served on
the boards of numerous heritage conservation organizations and
divides his teaching and lecturing between Canada, China and Mexico.
Richard Linzey is a heritage planner with the City of Victoria. He is
a specialist in the conservation and management of cultural resources.
He worked for English Heritage for fourteen years where he led the
architecture team and was a director of special projects. His
experience of cultural resources ranges from Stonehenge to the Cold
War, from fur-farming to submarine-mining.
Registration: Credit and non-credit registration options available.
Space is currently available in both courses.
Registration deadline is Monday, August 11, 2008.
Fee: $458.10 per course (plus text/readings, credit or non-credit.
Please note that as this is an on-campus course, you are also
assessed UVic Student Society fees if you register for credit.)
