The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for a permanent full-time Heritage Planner to join our team of professionals in the Community Development Division.  The Township has a unique heritage rooted in its rich history starting with the proclamation of B.C. as a Crown Colony at Fort Langley in 1858.  Incorporated in 1873 as one of the first municipalities in the province, the Township of Langley is also proud of its long pioneer and farming history.  Celebrating Langley's heritage is one of the goals of the draft Sustainability Charter, which is expected to be completed later this year.

Working as part of the Community Development Management Team, you will be responsible in this exempt position for heritage related issues and supporting various Council Committees such as the Community Heritage Commission, the Langley Centennial Museum and Land Use and Planning Sub-Committees.  You will also have the opportunity to undertake a variety of other planning projects.

Your education will include a university degree in planning or a directly related field, with eligibility for membership in PIBC, plus a minimum of 2 years experience in a related field.  Preference will be given to candidates who have a post graduate degree in Planning or an equivalent discipline combined with education and work experience related to heritage planning within a management capacity.  The position will require the successful candidate to be a strong advocate of heritage.  Among other duties, this position will be required to:
ˇ         make assessments in consultation with the community, based on Heritage Preservation Planning Tools: Standards and Guidelines for Conservation of Historic Buildings in Canada;
ˇ         negotiate and prepare Heritage Revitalization Bylaws, Heritage Designations and Heritage Covenants;
ˇ         administer the Heritage Building Incentive Program; and
ˇ         maintain the Heritage Listing and Register.

The position will also be involved in a variety of other professional planning work ranging from policy development to involvement in community and neighbourhood plans, as well as strategic and economic initiatives related to preserving the Township's heritage programs.  Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are essential in this role. Extensive computer familiarity is required with proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, visual presentations, GIS and database management.  A valid Class 5 (full-privilege) B.C. Driver's license is also required.
