Larry,

In my experience, any heritage funding from the Provincial Government is
welcomed with open arms, whether my organization makes use of it or someone
else's does.  Additionally, I feel the more we apply for grants made
available by government at any level, we prove not only our need for these
grants, but also our willingness to contribute to the cultural education of
our communities. 

I recall you commenting not that long ago about a federal grant proposal you
submitted that was denied.  In that commentary, you expressed your dismay
over the distribution of funding to larger organizations while the smaller,
more remote museums continue to suffer.  Had your capital project been
suitable for this BC150 Program, I am sure you would be applying for it,
whether you had planned for it 6 months ago or not.  

As for tailoring applications, each and every grant application I complete
lays out a set of criteria my project and/or organization must meet.  To
receive funding from a foundation or grant organization is to carry out the
mandate of that foundation or grant organization.  It is why they exist and
why they distribute funds.  If the project doesn't meet the criteria, it
won't be funded.  In order to ensure it does, it must fulfill the mission of
the funding body.  In other words, we all tailor applications in order to
get funding; what matters is the outcome of the project.

Although we are engaged with other activities this year and did not submit
an application, I thank Jim and the BCMA for sending out this reminder.  We
have just completed a run of submissions (2 out of 3 funded!) and I'm sure I
would have needed it.

Congratulations to those who need this reminder. 

We plan our exhibits 6 months or a year ahead of time and then seek funding
- in other words we do not do projects because some special fund is
available and we then tailor it for that application.

However, I appreciate the funding shortage and can see why some museums
would tailor their projects to available funding.

...Hmmm, Larry, judging by the rate of inquiries and the number of project
applications we are tracking from all corners of the province; and the fact
that several applications seem to have been in progress without prior
consultation with the office; and that the original May 30 deadline was
extended, (of which some prospective clients were at first unaware, then
decided to proceed with project applications after May 30); it seems worth a
listserv reminder that the deadline is a "postmark" deadline, as such
reminders of approaching deadlines, (ie Awards & Bursaries, Golden Services
Awards, Conference and Regional Workshop registrations, operating assistance
and project grants, etc), are common practice on BCMA-L and seem to be
appreciated by those who participate.
