The Doctor Is In: A Medical History of New Westminster
>From early settlement through to today, New Westminster's Medical
community has held watch over the wellbeing of its residents. Unique
artifacts and photos from the New Westminster Museum & Archives
collection and Royal Columbian Hospital Nurses Alumni take you on a
journey through your city's medical past by exploring its people, places
and practices.

Museum Programs
The Shaping of Euro North American Masculinities and the Representation
of Native Men
What makes a man? The paintings of Western artists such as George
Catlin, Felix O.C. Darley and Frederick Remington are examples of how
the image of the Aboriginal male was altered to change the definition of
masculinity in Euro-North American Victorian society. Join art historian
Roland Maurice as he explores the image of the "Wild Indian" in art as a
popular example for the late Victorian male of unadulterated male power,
admired for his strength, courage and savagery.

BC's 150th: Royal Engineers Encampment on the Lawn of Irving House
Travel back to the New Westminster's early days. Meet members of the
Royal Engineers Living History Group and learn what New Westminster was
like during the days of the gold rush. Using period clothing and
equipment re-enactors will set up a camp on the lawn of Irving House,
bringing back daily life in the colony of British Columbia 150 years
ago. Following your visit with the Royal Engineers join our costumed
guides for a tour of Historic Irving House; built in 1865, two years
following their departure.

Mother's Day Tea a Irving House
Treat your mother to a traditional Victorian tea served in the
"Grandmother's" Room at Irving House. Costumed Guides will serve tea and

you enjoy a visit to Irving House, the home of Elizabeth Irving, one of
the City's pioneer mothers! Four seatings, accommodating six people, are
available.

New Westminster Heritage Cycling Tour
The New Westminster Museum and Archives and the Vancouver Area Cycling
Coalition join to take you on a cycling tour of BC's first city.
Following city greenways, cyclists will be introduced to some beautiful
examples of City architecture and significant landmarks. This tour will
take you from Sapperton, discussing the early days of the Royal
Engineers, through Queen's Park and into the downtown area, once known
as The Golden Mile finishing with a tour of Irving House, New
Westminster's oldest intact residence.
