A CONFERENCE FOR THOSE WHO LIKE HISTORY
The British Columbia Historical Federation is holding their annual
conference and AGM in New Westminster, one of B.C.’s first capital
cities, to celebrate B.C.’s 150^th birthday.
The opening reception on Thursday May 8^th is the start of two exciting
days to follow. Friday morning offers speakers on themes related to BC’s
first capital, Langley and New Westminster – the Royal Engineers
re-enactors – Jim Wolf on New Westminster and Charles Hou on the Gold
Rush and gold rush trails.
A book fair filled with books, new and old, about British Columbia, is
being hosted by the B.C. Genealogical Society – if you are looking for
something special, you might find it here. At noon a bus leaves for Fort
Langley and a guided tour of the Fort and other museums in the area. You
will also enjoy high tea at St. George’s Anglican Church.
Saturday morning is the AGM (1 – 2 hours) with one minute reports about
events and fund raisers, from some of the historical societies
throughout the province followed by lunch at the restored Victoria
Mansion, Galbraith House. The afternoon offers a choice of three walking
tours – the waterfront – the Museum of the Royal Westminster Regiment –
a tour of the historic Queens Park neighborhood.
Saturday evening is the Awards reception and banquet at the Inn at
Westminster Quay. This fascinating weekend gives participants a great
opportunity to revisit some of British Columbia’s colorful history and
to meet and talk to “history minded” people from many areas throughout B.C.
May 9 – 11 in New Westminster. Book now – limited registration. For
