FRASER RIVER DISCOVERY CENTRE JOB POSTING

POSITION: Education Program Assistant – Public Programs
Full-time, 35 hours per week, Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30 to 4:00. 
 This position would begin in late May 2008 and end in August 2008 for a
period of 12-14 weeks. 
*Wage and period of employment dependent upon funding approval. Must be a
returning full-time student eligible for employment*


Salary:  $12.00 per hour 
The Fraser River Discovery Centre (FRDC) is looking for a qualified
candidate to assist with the delivery of quality educational programming on
the magnificent Fraser River.  The FRDC is a hands-on interpretive centre
with a mission to take a key leadership role in enhancing the health and
sustainability of the Fraser River by enlightening and educating individuals
of all ages and cultures about the historical, aesthetic, and spiritual
worth of the Fraser River and its basin.

This position is responsible for:
• Assisting in research and development of new public interpretation
programs for children and adults:
o Creating of a training package for program delivery
o Creating and designing  props
o Researching and creating programs for general public at Centre and at
special events
o Creating a marketing plan and promotional materials
• Assisting with volunteer program:
o Developing a volunteer marketing plan
o Liaise with internal and external volunteer groups
o Assisting with training of volunteer team
• Assisting with researching potential program opportunities in sponsorships
and for the 2010 Winter Olympics. 
• Other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

To be screened for an interview, you must clearly state in your cover letter
how you meet each of the following criteria:

• Minimum 2nd year education, environmental education, biology, history,
tourism, natural sciences, or related field of studies, or an acceptable
combination of education, training and experience
• Public Speaking skills and experience working in group settings
• Experience working both independently and as an effective member of a team

• Strong communication skills
• Working knowledge of freshwater ecosystems and river landscapes
• Volunteer supervision or experience an asset
• Proficient with various software programs, including Office 2003, MS Word,
Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and other design applications
• Willing to complete a Criminal Record Clearance
• A class 5 driver’s license is not mandatory but is an asset. 


This is a Summer Career Placement position and to be eligible you must:
• Be registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and
intending to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic
year;
• Be a student in post-secondary, vocational or technical program, but not
attending full-time classes while participating in their placement
• Be between the ages of 19 and 30 years of age at the time of
intake/selection
• Be legally entitled to work in Canada according to relevant provincial
legislation and regulations
• Not hold another full time (30 or more hours) summer job
