"Raising the Bar:=20
Historical Perspectives on Women and the Law"
October 3-4, 2008

The Women's History Network of British Columbia invites proposals for =
papers and other oral/visual presentations for its 2008 conference on =
the theme "Historical Perspectives on Women and the Law." =20
The conference organizers encourage papers and presentations that =
consider the law broadly, in terms of both formal and informal legal =
systems. Potential topics include: women's encounters with specific =
types of law (e.g., immigration, employment, family, criminal); women in =
the legal profession or law enforcement; aboriginal women and the law; =
women's bodies and the law; gender "equality" under the law; feminist =
critiques of legal issues; women and alternative forms of justice; and =
the law as it intersects with race, gender, sexuality, and/or =
disability.
Papers and presentations should be 15-20 minutes in length.
Location:
This year's conference will be held in Victoria, BC, beginning with an =
evening event on Friday, October 3 (location to be announced) and =
continuing through Saturday, October 4, at the historic courtroom in the =
Maritime Museum, 28 Bastion Square.
Submission:
Please submit by email a brief (300 word) abstract of your paper or =
presentation plus a one-page biography to the following:

The Women's History Network of British Columbia (WHN/BC) is a broadly =
based not- for-profit society that exists to celebrate the contributions =
women have made to the history of the province. Composed of those who =
research, discuss, write about and care about women's history, it =
provides an opportunity for networking and for accessing information.=20
WHN/BC includes as members archivists, teachers, professors, writers, =
genealogists, students and others interested in the field of women's =
history. WHN/BC's major focus is on providing information and =
opportunities for networking. WHN/BC is committed to inclusivity with =
respect to gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, region, =
religion, and ability.=20
