Nature of Position
Marketing and development are important aspect of the H.R. MacMillan Space
Centre mandate. Every day visitors of all ages are engaged with a sense of
wonder about the universe, our planet and space exploration. The H.R.
MacMillan Space Centre is seeking a Communications Officer to work with our
team to coordinate, prepare and disseminate a variety of information and
publications to promote awareness of the Space Centre=B9s programs and
exhibitions.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
This work includes writing or editing material for use in activity and
program brochures, calendars, newsletters, annual reports, news releases,
websites, and advertising and related design work. In addition the
incumbent coordinates special events as required; including developing
promotional strategy, arranging for catering, performers, and facilities.
Considerable independence of action and judgement is exercised in the
creative aspects of the work, while written copy is checked for factual
accuracy by appropriate staff. Monitoring expenditures, preparing and
maintaining records and related materials, and preparing budget estimates
are included in duties. Duties are performed under minimal supervision,
with performance being evaluated in terms of the accomplishment of desired
objectives.

The incumbent will coordinate publicity for exhibitions and programs;
research and collect information; write material or solicit and reviews tex=

prepared by other staff; format and proof text; layout and produce camera
ready copy using desktop publishing software. The incumbent will work with
in-house or contract staff on illustrations and artwork; take or select
photographs; prepare designs and layout; select printing materials; obtain
price quotations for services and supplies, consults with suppliers,
printers and contract staff on price, quantity and delivery; ensure
accuracy, quality and cost effectiveness of completed work. The incumbent
in this position establishes and maintains effective working relationships
with a variety of internal and external contacts including staff,
volunteers, the general public, community and school groups in order to
respond to a wide variety of questions with regard to the activities and
programs at the Space Centre. Maintaining and establishing close liaisons
and contacts with the press, radio and TV media to publicize events and
shows; disseminate and distribute promotional material, and to contact
advertising representatives and place print advertisements is important wor=
k
for this position. The incumbent will attend meetings with other cultural
organizations in order to coordinate the production of joint promotional
materials or campaigns.

Qualifications
v University graduation in communications or related discipline plus soun=
d
related experience or and equivalent combination of education and
experience.=20
v Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques used
in preparing promotional material.
v Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, techniques, tools and
equipment related to work performed.
v Working knowledge of advertising and promotional methods, procedures an=
d
materials used by cultural organizations.
v Some knowledge of astronomy, space technology and of Space Centre
facilities and equipment capabilities.
v Ability to research and collect information, write material, revise and
edit written copy for a variety of uses and purposes.
v Some knowledge of budget preparation and control.
v Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff=
