Inuit Dolls of the Kivalliq at The Burnaby Art Gallery
June 3 - July 27, 2008
=20
(BURNABY, BC) - Opening on June 3 at the Burnaby Art Gallery is a unique
contemporary craft exhibition titled Inuit Dolls of the Kivalliq. The
exhibition features 65 traditionally constructed dolls by women from the
Kivalliq region of Nunavut. Organized by the Tarralikitaaq Arts Society
doll making workshops took place throughout the Kivalliq region in 2007.
Some were traditional in nature, some focussed on new materials. The
workshops concluded with the Kivalliq Inuit Doll Festival Exhibition and
Story-Telling Traditions program in Rankin Inlet last September. Over
200 dolls were exhibited, representing seven communities - Arviat, Baker
Lake, Chesterfield Inlet, Coral Harbour, Rankin Inlet, Repulse Bay and
Whale Cove.=20
=20
"Doll making is a cultural enterprise for Inuit women of the Kivalliq
region. For some their work is related to legend, symbolize historical
figures or represent traditional artistic practices. Inuit Dolls of the
Kivalliq provides an opportunity to explore the traditional educational
practice of doll making within the context of western Euro-centric
educational systems. Through their art, knowledge and life skills are
passed on from one generation to another ensuring that traditional forms
of expression are not lost while taking into account new artistic
influences and methods." notes curator Darrin Martens.
=20
An opening reception will be held for the exhibition on Saturday, June 7
from 1-3 p.m.=20
=20
A Lunch B.A.G. Days program ($8.50 per person) will be held on Friday,
June 20 from 12:10-12:50 p.m. with curator Darrin Martens leading a
tour. For more information about the exhibit, programs or tours call

=20
(BURNABY, BC) - The Burnaby Art Gallery is very pleased to present the
second in the series of exhibitions focussed on the changing British
Columbia landscape. The physical and conceptual landscape of British
Columbia has changed dramatically over the past two centuries. Artists

landscapes. This exhibition focuses on works created by artists between
1950 and 1980. Works of art on paper by Jack Akroyd, Sybil Andrews, Fred
Amess, Maxwell Bates, Alistair Bell, Bruno Bobak, Ann Kipling, Arthur
Lismer, Toni Onley, Arnold Shives and Gordon Smith among others will be
exhibited Through their drawings, prints and photographs a sense of the
region with its urban and rural constituencies after WW II emerges and
speaks to the uniqueness and sense of place that has since become known
as the Province of British Columbia.=20
=20
"The changing British Columbia landscape exhibition landscape series
provides the opportunity for us as a society to see how artists have
interpreted and depicted the natural and cultural landscapes of our
province. 2008 is the 150th anniversary of the founding of the colony of
British Columbia. At this important historical juncture, it is important
to revisit and reflect on the work of prominent British Columbia artists
and how they incorporated the landscape into their artistic practices."
notes curator Darrin Martens.
