Exclusive Bateman Painting is Unveiled at RRU President’s Garden Party
For immediate release – Saturday, May 10, 2008
Victoria, B.C. – Over 300 supporters of Royal Roads University (RRU)
were treated today to a first look at /Heritage /– a new 1.5 metre by
2.5 metre (5’ x 8’) painting created expressly for the university by
Canadian realist painter Robert Bateman.
“Donation of all reproduction rights to this beautiful work will go to
support the Robert Bateman Art and Environmental Education Centre,” said
Dr. Allan Cahoon, RRU’s president.
The Bateman Centre, a “living building” that will emit zero greenhouse
gases and have, in fact, a positive impact on the environment, will –
when constructed – house the donated works of Robert Bateman and become
an international model for environmental learning and research at RRU.
Cahoon, host of the annual garden party to thank university supporters,
acknowledged a number of other donations to RRU and the
recently-launched Legacy Campaign.
First, a thank you went to donors who, overall, have contributed
$400,000 to RRU’s ongoing garden inventory project. Supporters include
Ian and Rosemary Mottershead who, in 2004, pledged $300,000; Sue and
Charlie Johnson who donated $40,000; the McLean Foundation which has
contributed $10,000; and RRU staff and faculty who raised $17,000 that
was, in turn, matched by their employer. The university’s neighbours on
the West Shore were also acknowledged for their enthusiastic support of
this project.
“The need to study, catalog and document all the ornamental trees and
shrubs on this historic site really caught the imagination of supporters
and we are so grateful for their donations” says Barrie Agar, RRU’s head
gardener.
The inventory provides a curatorial basis for establishing a historical
and botanical garden. It is also a valuable record of the RRU collection
and increases understanding of how the Hatley Park landscape has evolved
over the past 100 years since James and Laura Dunsmuir created the
Edwardian estate that became RRU’s campus.
“Living collections do not remain static, of course, and our challenge
will be to continue to document this important National Historic Site
for the next 100 years,” said Cahoon.
The second announcement of the day was to acknowledge $40,000 from the
Fisher Foundation. It is the third in a series of gifts over the years
from the foundation established by the late Ralph and Grace Fisher who
founded Crestwood Farms greenhouses in Richmond and co-founded the
United Flower Growers in British Columbia. The Fisher Foundation’s gift
of $20,000 in 2004 supported construction of a walkway in the Italian
Garden, making this popular destination wheelchair accessible. The
Fisher Foundation’s second gift of $750,000, pledged in 2005, helped
restore RRU’s 100-year-old greenhouse to award-winning heritage
standards. Now, this latest donation will ensure maintenance of the
greenhouse for the next 100 years.
“The Fishers were pioneers in the B.C. greenhouse industry and I know
they would be proud to see that this award-winning heritage greenhouse
will be enjoyed by many generations to come,” said David Rutherford,
RRU’s manager of grounds and gardens.
Cahoon then acknowledged a generous donation from Laura and Mike de
Jonge of Calgary. “Their gift - $22,500 to date – will grow threefold
because Laura’s employer, Nexen Inc., is matching this donation and our
Foundation will match both,” said Cahoon.
The Laura and Mike de Jonge Bursary was awarded in 2007 and 2008 and
will continue to be awarded annually. The $2,500 bursary goes to
learners who demonstrate leadership, commitment to community involvement
and a desire to make a positive and lasting impact. In 2010, the bursary
may be increased to $5000.
“Mike and I feel strongly about donating to organizations that
contribute to sustainable solutions,” said Laura de Jonge, who will soon
graduate from RRU’s master’s program in environment and management. “RRU
plays an important role in equipping people to meet societal and
environmental challenges and thanks to this matching program, we are
able to support learners in financial need so that they can make a
difference.”
RRU’s Legacy Campaign is a multi-year initiative aimed at raising $100
million for academic, heritage and sustainability projects. The goal is
for philanthropic donations to bring in $60 million with $40 million
coming from government and private sector investment. /Funds raised to
date total $35 million, including $15 million from the B.C. government
for a new academic building and $20 million in philanthropic donations.///
