Victoria, B.C. – Royal Roads University will launch Canada’s first
Master of Arts degree in Tourism Management
<http://www.royalroads.ca/programs/faculties-schools-centres/faculty-tourism-hotel-management/school-of-tourism/trmn/network-model.htm>
September 15, 2008. Designed to prepare tourism leaders with the
knowledge and skills required to take the industry to next level, this
unique program will equip professionals with information, insights,
tools, and techniques required to succeed in a complex, evolving, and
competitive industry.

An Ipsos Reid study confirmed that 65 per cent of tourism professionals
would like to study while continuing to work. Accordingly, the applied
graduate degree was designed with a blend of on-site and online
learning. Three short-term residencies of eight, 10, and 12 days provide
face-to-face interaction over the two-year program; the remainder of the
course work is delivered via the Internet.

The majority of the course work is completed from October to April in
response to the unique seasonal demands of the tourism industry, where
the summer season is the busiest time of the year.

“The network model enables learners in this 36-credit program to
progress through four, nine-credit modules,” says Nancy Arsenault, dean
of the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management. “Learners may start the
degree throughout the year in one of three modules in tourism
leadership, destination development, or sustainable tourism. They
sequence their program in the order that meets their needs, ending with
the applied tourism research module."

This new degree complements the faculty’s existing programs in
International Hotel Management and is designed to advance the careers of
people working in or supporting the tourism industry.

“The elements of every course were designed with industry and
prospective learner input to ensure the content is relevant to the
private sector, government employees, and people in not-for-profit
organizations,” says Brian White, director of the School of Tourism and
Hotel Management.

Learners will examine leading edge tourism, destination, and
sustainability theory. They will also meet industry leaders and analyze
Canadian and international case studies to discover innovative solutions
to industry challenges at the local, regional, national and
international levels.

Like many thriving sectors of the economy, tourism is preparing for the
next generation of leaders says Arsenault.

“The industry continues to grow and we are already seeing senior and
executive leaders retiring or planning their retirement in the next five
years,” says Arsenault. “The timing is right to introduce a program
designed for tourism professionals who wish advance their careers.”
