PROJECT MANAGER
Kla-how-eya Canoe:  A Learning Journey
 
The City of Surrey's Parks Recreation and Culture Department is 
interested in receiving applications from skilled, energetic, 
self-motivated individuals to join their team in the role of Project 
Manager (Art Coordinator) at the Surrey Art Gallery. This is a 
temporary, full-time position to March 31, 2009, supported by a grant 
from Cultural Capitals of Canada 2008.
 
We are looking for an individual who is interested and excited by the 
possibilities for the arts to bridge cultural differences and to build 
linkages between the arts, educational and cultural sectors of the 
community. The successful applicant will be an experienced educator with 
a background in visual and/or performing arts, as well as an 
understanding of First Nations arts and culture.  Candidates should have 
excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, computer skills and 
be able to demonstrate the ability to plan, implement and manage 
large-scale projects. Successful applicants will have experience leading 
project teams and working effectively with aboriginal persons, schools, 
youth and the public.  Preference will be given to candidates who have 
knowledge of current BC fine arts and aboriginal studies curricula, 
strong communication and program development skills, and proficiency in 
spoken and written English.
 
The Project Manager will be responsible for various tasks, including: 
organizing and presenting a touring exhibition of a full size, 
aboriginal cedar canoe to local and regional schools and festivals; 
working with consultants to research and develop a multimedia, 
theatrical education program centered on the creation of the canoe; 
developing and supervising a team of youth artists and aboriginal elders 
to implement the education program; researching and writing project 
materials; project scheduling and promotion; acquiring and maintaining 
project equipment and participating on the project steering committee.
 
Applicants must have a degree/diploma from a recognized University or 
College in Fine Arts or a related discipline and 3- 5 years of 
experience in the area of education, visual arts, dramatic arts, 
inter-cultural studies or arts management.  The successful candidate 
will hold a valid BC Driver's license and have access to a vehicle for
