Royal BC Museum remembers military personnel this week
VICTORIA, BC - This year, the Royal BC Museum will mark Remembrance
Day with seven days of activities honouring veterans and the organizations
that support them.
>From Nov. 5 to 11, the Royal BC Museum (RBCM), in partnership with
Veterans Affairs Canada, brings together military historians, veterans'
associations and community groups to present free talks, activities and
displays in the museum lobby and conference halls, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. each
day.
"Remembrance Day is a time to honour those who have served - and those
who continue to serve," says RBCM CEO Pauline Rafferty. "It's important
to us, at the Royal BC Museum, to recognize the sacrifices and
achievements of Canada's military personnel, and to underscore the
historical significance of their actions."
Highlights during the week include a pair of performances by the
Victoria Children's Choir (Nov. 11 at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.); talks with
military personnel recounting wartime experiences (Nov. 11 at 1, 2 and 3
p.m.); and presentations by historian Paul Ferguson about the
battlefields of Flanders and Malta (Nov. 8 and 9 at 3 p.m.). Displays
include a 1942 RCAF Willys MB military jeep, a collection of trench art
and replicas of the National War Memorial and Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier.
On Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, the Royal BC Museum invites military
personnel and their families to visit the museum galleries free of
charge.
To accommodate Remembrance Day displays, the Spirit of Tomorrow
automobile has been temporarily moved from the museum lobby. The
BC-designed and -built car will return on Nov. 13 and remain in the
lobby until Jan. 11, 2009.
The Royal BC Museum, a provincial crown corporation, collects, preserves
and interprets artifacts, specimens and documents that tell the story of
British Columbia. As the provincial museum and archives, the RBCM
proudly shares that story with the world through its research,
collections, exhibitions and public programs.
