Douglas Day Honours James Douglas

What would Old Squaretoes think now?

When James Douglas stood in the Big House at Fort Langley on November
19, 1858 and read out the proclamation that declared British Columbia a
Crown Colony, what did he envision for the future of B.C.?

Douglas was born August 15, 1803 in Demerara, British Guiana (now
Guyana), the son of a Creole woman and a Scottish merchant. By the time
he died on August 2, 1877 in Victoria, Douglas had made a firm mark on
British Columbia.

Douglas Day Celebration

On November 19, 1858, Governor James Douglas read the official
proclamation that declared British Columbia a Crown Colony. It cemented
one of the most significant events in B.C. history, and it took place at
Fort Langley.

We hope you'll join us at the Fort, which is now a National Historic
Site, on November 19, 2008 as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of this
great event.

Starting at 4:30 p.m., BC150 is hosting a free family festival and
concert that will feature many performers from Langley, as well as
award-winning B.C. artists, including The Higgins and Jessie Farrell.

For more information about Douglas Day events, visit the BC150 website
<http://bc150.ca/bc150.aspx?page=douglas_day> .

British Columbia Moments

Help celebrate British Columbia's rich history by submitting a
noteworthy event to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.

A distinguished committee will choose 150 events from all entries to
create a legacy of BC150; the moments will be captured in 150 engraved
stones that will be placed on the grounds of the Parliament Buildings in
Victoria.

This is an opportunity for all British Columbians to contribute to the
story of B.C.
