The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria, Bri=

CONSERVATION IN CONTEXT: FRAMEWORKS FOR HERITAGE STEWARDSHIP

This course addresses the complex range of principles and practices that cr=
eate a framework for effective heritage preservation and conservation plann=
ing and decision-making. The practical implications of international and na=
tional conservation charters, principles, standards, and guidelines are dis=
cussed, along with legal, programmatic, and financial incentives and constr=
aints. Strengthen your capacity to:
* Trace the evolution of preservation and conservation activity in Canad=
a and beyond
* Work within a principled, systematically organized and systemic framew=
ork for conservation decision-making
* Identify programs, funding opportunities, and other networks that supp=
ort conservation activity
* Distinguish between intervention, conservation and management planning=
for places of heritage value, and work with methodologies for each
* Respect and integrate the values and interests of communities in conse=
rvation decision-making
* Recognize the range of options for intervention, use and development (=
additions, modifications) that can be considered in managing historic prope=
rties
* Anticipate the implications for conservation decision-making on contem=
porary concerns for values-based approaches, sustainability, risk preparedn=
ess, monitoring effectiveness, building performance upgrading (seismic and =
fire codes, energy performance, accessibility requirements), cultural lands=
cape and other holistic approaches, environmental assessment approaches; an=

The Cultural Resource Management Program is an Architectural Institute of B=
ritish Columbia (AIBC) registered provider offering an AIBC-accredited acti=
vity for continuing education learning units. AIBC members can earn 36 non-=
core learning credits.
Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC) members may earn 36 learning =
units of organized Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity for p=
articipating in this course.

Instructor: Herb Stovel
Herb Stovel has lectured and delivered courses on conservation and heritage=
management at more than 30 universities and training institutions, coverin=
g all continents. For six years (1998-2004), Stovel was Director of the Her=
itage Settlements Unit at the International Centre for the Study of the Pre=
servation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) in Rome. Since 2004=
, he has directed the Carleton University School of Canadian Studies gradua=
te programme in Heritage Conservation, founded in 1989.
