The Nanaimo Art Gallery, campus location, 900 Fifth Street, Building 330
will present “prOcess: the faculty show”. Faculty from the Vancouver
Island University present their works from August 29 to October 4^th ,
with the opening reception occurring on Friday, September 5 from
7:00-9:00pm. The focus of this exhibition is on the many techniques and
processes that artists use to create their work. The various disciplines
of both applied and visual arts reveal the broad spectrum of processes
that are used to produce art. Artists taking part are Gregory Ball, Fran
Benton, Jane Cole, Rick Conroy, Bodil Ellins, Karen Hodgson, Scott Leaf,
Ellen McClusky, Pamela Speight. Nanaimo Art Gallery curator, Fran
Benton, elaborates on the show: “When teachers are artists we are given
a fascinating insight into the way art is created. Often the
interpretation of art is difficult, leaving many viewers puzzled about
the artist’s intention and process. Fortunately for the viewers of this
show the artists are interpreters and reveal a complex and curious
glimpse into the creative mind. The world of the faculty of art and
design at Vancouver Island University is rich and unusual. The unusual
comes from the cross disciplinary nature of this group of people. For
example there is a printmaker making animated films, a graphics
instructor showing photographs, and a sculptor showing paintings. One
might expect a sculptor to show sculpture but in a small department such
as this, the familiar and intimate setting sets the stage for artists to
experiment across disciplines as well as with process and techniques.”
