About the Position
The Director, Grants and Community Initiatives, is responsible for
developing and managing strong grant making and community leadership
initiatives for Vancouver Foundation. The Director manages specific
granting portfolios including a *focus on arts and culture*, providing
expertise in areas of funding as well as being a generalist who deals
with a variety of proposals in two grant cycles throughout the year.
The Director works collaboratively to reach consensus on recommendations
to the Foundation's Board of Directors who make final decisions on
grants and keeps up to date on emerging trends in the Foundation's
granting areas. The incumbent works in a self directed manner with
community organizations and acts as a resource to communities throughout
British Columbia in response to their changing needs. The Director
provides philanthropic leadership through convening, identifying and
responding to community goals, needs and initiatives, and actively
participates in ensuring that Vancouver Foundation is externally
focused, continuously improving and results driven, all within their
assigned fields of interest.

Reporting**
This position reports to the VP, Grants and Community Initiatives and
may manage the activities and performance of a Program Assistant and/or
a Program Coordinator.

Main Responsibilities**

*Grants*
* Receive, review and screen all proposals, inquiries and
submissions---accepting and refusing appropriate and inappropriate requests
* Work with grant seekers whose ideas complement the foundation's
funding priorities and interests to develop high quality final
proposals---may conduct site visits prior to deliberation
* Compose summary description reports, staff observations and
recommendations for proposals chosen for submission to the Advisory
Committee
* Monitor and evaluate progress of grants, approves payments and
ensures financial accountability
* Develop new programming ideas and initiatives to benefit the
foundation---defining and refining grant making guidelines and
presenting to the Vice President and Executive Team for input and approval
* Maintain a field of interest responsibility through research on
funding opportunities, identify gaps in services and being knowledgeable
about emerging issues in the particular funding area.
*Donor Relations*
* In collaboration with Development and Donor Stewardship, maintain
relationships with appropriate donors in recommending granting options
from donor directed funds**
* Participate in planning and implementation of donor education
events. Help identify themes and speakers from community agencies.**
*Advisory Committee*
* Provide the staffing support to Advisory Committee(s) relative to
the Director's specific field of interest, including the recruitment and
orientation of new committee members; agenda preparation; overseeing the
minute taking of the meetings; and carrying out tasks on behalf of the
committee
* Facilitate the decision making process at committee meetings **
* Monitor the granting budget available for grants in the specific
field of interest**
* Organize the annual planning meeting for committees: prepare
reports to review and analyze grants and identify issues for discussion.**

* Participate in the Foundation's strategic and operational
planning, departmental annual objectives, and individual work plans**
* Identify, analyze and communicate best practices, new approaches
and opportunities in philanthropy on behalf of the GCI department and
the Foundation**
* Analyze and prepare reports on grant making within assigned
fields of interest. Produce minutes of planning meetings and provides
feedback to Distribution Committee about the assigned field of interest**
* Maintain contemporary skills and knowledge within the field of
philanthropy---attending seminars and professional training institutes
as appropriate. **
*Community Relations*
* Offer technical assistance consultation to grant seekers in need
---including fundraising, strategic planning, grant writing, evaluation,
and volunteer recruitment skills**
* Represent VF in community town hall meetings and at regional and
national conferences.

* Knowledge of the community perspective, processes, and salient issues
* BA or Post secondary degree in a relevant field or work
experience equivalent
* Formal training in conflict resolution is an asset
* Superior analytical, research, report writing, creating
presentations, and facilitating skills
* Ability to read and absorb large amounts of documentation and
information
* Strong user of MS Office suite
