Job Summary
To develop and implement biodiversity education programs for elementary 
and secondary students for the Beaty Biodiversity Museum. To develop and 
implement workshops and evening and weekend programming aimed at the 
wider community, both children and adults. To develop and implement a 
volunteer program for the Beaty Biodiversity Museum.
  
Organizational Status
Reports to the Exhibits & Program Director. Works with staff, students 
and volunteers. Works with local school teachers and community 
coordinators to develop and present joint education/community programs 
at the Museum. Recruits, trains, and supervises the docents who deliver 
Museum programming, and the Museum volunteers.
  

Work Performed
Writes, develops, pilots, and implements non-credit biodiversity 
educational programming for schoolchildren which addresses provincial IRPs
Assists with recruiting, and trains and supervises the staff who deliver 
educational programming, and facilitates programming as necessary
Assesses programming capacity and demand, develops and implements a 
programming schedule, and books individual tours
Develops a program evaluation scheme, and tracks visitor data to 
determine if programs are meeting the Museum's stated goals. Modifies 
programming if necessary.
Locates and purchases materials necessary for delivering programs, and 
assists in developing programming budget.
Prepares pre-visit and post-visit educational materials to be supplied 
to teachers.
Develops, pilots, and maintains Museum programming aimed at the wider 
community, including weekend workshops, summer programs for 
schoolchildren, and evening events such as the Biodiversity Lecture Series.
Develops and maintains connections with Vancouver nature organizations 
and networks with K-12 educators and other museum educators in the Lower 
Mainland
Prepares biodiversity educational materials for off-site lectures, 
tours, demonstrations and Museum related events
Plans, develops and coordinates displays of biodiversity materials for 
public and private events
Coordinates student and volunteer activity.  Trains and supervises 
docents as well as acts as resource person.  Develops Volunteer Handbook 
used to train volunteers and student docents.

Supervision Received
Reports to and works under the general direction of the Exhibits & 
Program Director. Must show a large degree of independence and be able 
to make day-to-day decisions independently. Work is reviewed for overall 
effectiveness and achievement of program objectives.

Delegates to and supervises work of students and volunteers.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Coordination of community educational initiatives requires significant 
biological and educational expertise as well as a high degree of 
coordination with other staff and/or volunteers. Poor performance will 
jeopardize the Museums's standing in the community.  The Museum will 
need to be supported by volunteers, the University community, and 
outside financial support, and this position will be key in developing 
and maintaining the community relationships that make this possible.
  
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.  .  3 years relevant 
experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.  
Extensive knowledge of biodiversity and experience working with a 
variety of organisms in the field.  Teaching and public program 
experience required. Related qualifications desirable, but not 
necessary. Familiarity with BC IRPs desirable, but not required.  
Experience recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers strongly 
preferred.  Understanding of the role of a Museum at the University, in 
the city and in the larger context.  Ability to plan, prioritize and 
execute workflow to meet deadlines under pressure. Ability to 
communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Effective public 
speaking skills. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team 
environment. Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, 
courteous, and effective manner.  Effective conflict resolution skills. 
Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and 
effectively resolve. Ability to interact and communicate with tact and 
discretion with multicultural sensitivity when dealing with internal and 
external contacts.
