/The Penticton Museum and Enowkin Centre presents :/
*Red Roads : A visual journey through Syilx history *
/Running from May 7^th -- Sept 7^th in the RN Atkinson Gallery of the
Penticton Museum/
The public is invited to a special opening of the Penticton Museum's
newest exhibit, /Red Roads : A visual journey through Syilx/ /history/
on May 7^th from 4:00 -6:30 pm. The event is part of the official
closing ceremony of Penticton Youth Week and will include live
entertainment, native foods and a special War Canoe Ceremony with the
Kwu Sukwna?qinx Youth Canoe Family.
* *
/Red Roads/ is a collaborative exhibit between the museum and the
Enowkin Centre and focuses on the special events that mark the modern
history of the Syilx people in Penticton. The exhibit spotlights
Penticton's Historical Period, or time when the first written narratives
about the area emerge with the arrival of the first Europeans from 1811
onwards. It is a history defined by changes to the Syilx's connection
to the land and to the politics and culture of the new settlers to their
traditional territory.
A unique component of the exhibit is the 'Time Tent', a long fabric
tunnel that visitors will pass through in order to witness key events in
Syilx history. It is designed and built by Chris Allen and Jurgen
Schlote from local architectural firm /Allen & Maurer Architects/. For
visitors and locals of Penticton, the exhibit provides an important and
rare opportunity to find out more about the many people, events and
circumstances behind the last 200 years of local First Nation
history. It is also a journey that identifies periods of Reflection,
Resistance and Renewal, and will assist the visitor to explore their own
relationship to a community that embodies a major part of Penticton's
past.
