Heritage Conservation Planning

HA 489L (1.5 units)

January 25 - 30th at the University of Victoria

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Heritage Conservation Planning (HA489L) has been rescheduled.  For those of you who were unable to join us for the original dates in December, you now have an opportunity to participate! A small number of seats are available.



This course focuses on approaches to heritage conservation revitalization and decision-making, and discusses the components of planning processes that include community involvement and consultation, the acquisition and integration of technical information and professional expertise, and the integration of conservation planning in the long-term management of heritage resources.



Through a focused examination of the process, tools and strategies to revitalize heritage resources and advance proposals through the regulatory and political processes, you develop your capacity to:

* Lead the planning process to develop solutions to retain at-risk heritage properties

* Advance proposals efficiently through the political and regulatory processes

* Identify and conserve the core community heritage values of properties undergoing redevelopment

* Integrate the Canadian Historic Places Initiatives tools into the rehabilitation process

* Reconcile heritage interests with other competing interests

* Structure public consultation processes and gain the collaboration of diverse stakeholders

* Overcome systematic obstacles to heritage conservation

* Shift political perspectives of heritage from a liability to an asset



Registration Deadline: December 18, 2009, late registrations accepted if space permits



Fee: CAD$652, including a CAD$70 materials fee (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit participation options). A CAD$170 registration deposit is required with each registration form. The tuition balance of CAD$482 is due on or before the first day of the course.

Instructor

Harold D. Kalman, Ph.D., is Principal of the Vancouver office of Commonwealth Historic Resource Management Limited. He is a specialist in the planning and history of heritage and cultural resources. Kalman is the author (or co-author) of many standard texts on conservation and architecture, including A History of Canadian Architecture, Exploring Vancouver, Exploring Ottawa, and Principles of Heritage Conservation. Kalman is Honorary Professor of Architecture at Hong Kong University and continues to lecture and teach worldwide on conservation and cultural heritage issues. He was awarded the 2009 Gabrielle Leger Award for Lifetime Achievement in Heritage Conservation from the Heritage Canada Foundation.
