Nordic Spirit Series: Images of Scandinavians in early BC
The Scandinavian Cultural Society of Burnaby has available a series of shows of historical images documenting the settlement in BC of immigrants from Scandinavian countries. The shows have been well received locally and in museums such as the Nordic Museum in Seattle. Many of the photos have never before appeared publicly.
Each show is organized by settlement, region, or activity. Some frames feature prominent early BC Scandinavians. Researched text appears adjacent to each photograph. Some frames include overall historical information.
Each show presents over 200 photographs in approximately 100 to 120 frames (16 x 24 and/or 13 by 17 inches). Shows may also be ordered in part. Electronic previews are available. Distant international museums may reprint and reframe digital copies on site.
Show rental is free. Damaged frames must be replaced at $20 to $25 each. The crated show may be collected and returned to Burnaby or shipped at your expense. Each show is stored in four sturdy crates approximately 2½ x3½ x2 feet. Frames hang from back wires.

Exhibition 1 - Nordic Spirit: Icelandic Settlement on the West Coast and Point Roberts
Over 200 digitally restored photographs illustrate Icelandic settlers in the early 1900’s. Collected, researched, and restored over thirty years by Robert Asgeirsson, curator of the Icelandic Archives of BC, these pictures poignantly document Icelanders’ contributions to the building of British Columbia. Notable individuals include Byron ‘Boss’ Johnson, Canada’s first non-Canadian Premier (1947), Geiri Sigurgeirsson, fishing boat designer, and a gentleman called Erikson, personal fishing guide to Bing Crosby.
Exhibition 2 - Nordic Spirit: Finnish immigrants in BC
Restored historical and modern images illustrate how Finns, working from B.C.’s earliest days, have built not only their own rich life, but the new province itself. Photos and text show fishing, logging, building, and socializing in several noted Finnish settlements: Clinton Hall, Vancouver; Finn’s Slough on the Fraser River; the utopian society of Sointula; Webster’s Corner. The exhibition was prepared by the Finnish Heritage Society with support from the Finnish community.
Exhibition 3 – Nordic Spirit: The Danes in BC
Danish pioneer activities are illustrated by over 250 historical photographs with text, including an incredible group of very early photos from Cape Scott on Vancouver Island, begun in 1897. Social clubs and businesses are shown together with profiles of several prominent early Danish Canadians. The show was prepared over two years by Poul Erik Rasmussen of the Scandinavian Cultural Society and The Danish Brotherhood.
Exhibition 4 – Nordic Spirit: Swedish settlement in BC
