Hi Tom,
Yes, we at the Campbell River Museum lovingly, protractedly and with many in-kind contributions, volunteers, and an HRDC grant restored an Empire Steam Donkey manufactured in Vancouver in 1916. As Louise Avery mentioned, our website below gives you an overview. (thanks Louise)
If you have specific questions, email our Exhibits/Collections manager, Sandra Parrish.
It is fully operational and we 'Steam it' in a public event a minimum of twice per year, eg Labour Day and Father's day (needed to keep it from rusting out again, etc) There is a cost to keeping it inspected and needing licensed operators to operate it.

Tom,
I believe that Lesia Davis and the Museum at Campbell River completed a restoration of their steam donkey. Here is the link to their site and a pic of the restored steam donkey http://www.crmuseum.ca/exhibits/history_outdoors.html

Subject: [BCMA] Burnaby Village Museum looking for Steam Donkey information.
The Burnaby Village Museum is looking for information about Steam Donkeys used in the logging and milling industries.
We have a donkey engine in our collections and we would like to know if anyone has had the experience of restoring such a machine - mainly the vertical boiler.
Any other information you might have about Vancouver Engineering Works equipment would be very helpful as well. We do have information that the VEW was manufacturing these engines under liecense from Whillamette Iron and Steel Works in Portland, Oregon
Description:
Steam Donkey, made by Vancouver Engineering Works. It consists of a verticle boiler with a fuel tank for oil and two winch drums. The engine, boiler and winch drums are mounted on a steel frame that could in turn be mounted on skids or a deck depending on intended use.
The gears are protected by covers and a brake is fitted to the winch.
The engine is a 10 X 15 (10 inch dia. cylinders X 15 inch stroke) and the registration number is 42750.
