Mark your calendars - It's the Winter Solstice!!

Join in a tradition that societies in the Northern hemisphere have been 
celebrating for thousands of years. On this, the shortest day of the year, the 
winter solstice represents a change in Mother Nature's yearly cycle with the 
start of longer and warmer days to follow.

To mark this special day, the Okanagan Astronomical Society and Penticton 
Museum invite the public to celebrate this year's winter solstice on Monday, 
December 21st from 3pm - 6pm at Munson Mountain Park and the Penticton 
Museum.

3:00pm - 3:45pm : Munson Mountain Park
The event starts at 3:00pm in the park's carpark, followed by a 10 minute 
hike to the top of Munson Mountain, where the Okanagan Astronomical 
Society will be preparing the installation of 'Sunset Markers' for the park's 
new outdoor monument. Cheer the sun as it drops over the mountains to 
mark the end of the year's shortest day!
Dress warmly and be prepared for extreme weather conditions! Some steep 
trail hiking will be required so appropriate footwear is recommended.

4pm - 6pm : Penticton Museum
Come inside for warm beverages, appetizers and confections and enjoy the 
museum's latest exhibit, Stars Alive! Stargazing through the Ages. The 
exhibit offers a fascinating journey through the history of astronomy during 
the 2009 International Year of Astronomy and provides tons of hands-on 
activities, including the special set-up of a telescope for some directed star-
gazing. From 5 - 6pm, a panel of local astronomers will discuss the Past, 
Present and Future of Astronomy.

Admission is free and open to the public.
