Nature of Position
Learning is an important aspect of the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre mandate.
Every day visitors of all ages are engaged with a sense of wonder about the
universe, our planet and space exploration. The H.R. MacMillan Space Centr=

is seeking a dynamic individual to develop and present interpretive program=
s
to a variety of audiences at the Space Centre and off-site, both locally an=
d
province-wide. =20
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Working with staff in Learning Services, the interpreter is expected to act
with initiative, work independently and as part of a team to develop and
deliver selected astronomy, space science and sustainability education
programs and activities both on-site and off-site. Audiences include:
adults, children, families, ESL, school and community groups, and the
general public. The incumbent may independently develop and present a
variety of assigned interpretive programs and may work with partners to
assists in planning and presenting specific programs and special events.
Work includes researching topics related to set themes for integration into
presentations; selecting and developing activities; setting up and using
technology and equipment required to present interpretive programs; and
overseeing the maintenance of programming supplies. This position may also
design and create educational materials such as props, design and create
displays, brochures and signage. Liaising with teachers and other group
leaders to ensure assigned programs meet learning objectives is required;
the incumbent provides assistance to partners in presenting programs and
special events; and participates in planning interpretive special events;
and as required, provides information on programs and initiatives to the
media. Considerable independence of judgment and action are exercised
within program guidelines, referring unusual problems and policy matters to
a supervisor. This position may assist a superior in training, directing
and overseeing the work of volunteers; and provides assistance in training
junior interpretive staff. Work performance is evaluated by a superior in
terms of the quality of services provided and effectiveness in dealing with
the public.=20
Qualifications
v A passion for working with people and an energetic and enthusiastic team

v Sound knowledge of HR MacMillan Space Centre policies, regulations and
equipment as they relate to the work performed
v Ability to effectively communicate and present routine programs and
activities to a variety of audiences
v Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults, to lead grou=
p
activities and provide instruction, and to promote interest in the HR
MacMillan Space Centre initiatives and events
v Ability to effectively develop and present interpretive programs to group=
s
on a variety of topics, to research subjects related to presentation, and t=
o
prepare educational materials and displays
v Sound knowledge of astronomy, space science, and sustainability
v Sound knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques of developing and
presenting interpretive programs and activities
v Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a
variety of internal and external contacts
v Perform related office support functions such as responding to informatio=
n
requests from the public, forwarding group bookings, and maintaining files
and records
v Working knowledge of departmental goals and objectives
v Graduation from a technology institute or community college in astronomy,
sciences, environmental education or a related subject plus some related
experience in interpretation techniques and working with children or an
equivalent combination of training and experience
v Level 1 First Aid and a Valid BC Driver=B9s License is an asset
