I purchased large sheets of blotting paper from OPUS and some from Carr =
McLean. That was a 2-3 years ago - and if I recall correctly, it was =
all acid free.=20

Where are you finding blotting paper nowadays? Does
it come in sheets or rolls? And lastly, is construction
paper a reasonable substitute for blotting paper?

Placing the cards into a dry open container into a rubber garbage can =
with an inch or two of water with the lid placed on top will re-hydrate =
most organic material in a day or two (it is a lot cheaper than using a =
humidifier - which essentially is just adding moisture to the air - =
which the water in the bottom of the garbage can will do without needing =
machinery). I then sandwich the piece between acid free blotting paper =
and put a weight on top. This will flatten out most pieces. However, =
not being a conservator, I would not necessarily do this for every piece =
that I want to flatten out (for example, I would question using this =
method with albumen photos [which typically curl] and seek out a =
conservator's advice), as some things might not react to humidity and =
buffered blotting paper in the same way. I do think that the post cards =
would be OK to treat in this manner. It would be nice to hear a =
conservator weigh in on this. =20

Hi Larry
Humidifying the post cards will straighten them.
We are using a Rubber Maid container hooked up to a humidifier.
Works well!

We have some boxes of old postcards, archival photos, that are =
curled from poor storage.
Is there a method of straightening them out and restoring, =
flattening, ironing etc.?
There are many repeats and we would like to put some in our sales =
gallery, but they are not in good enough condition as they are.
