Museum Assistant

The New Westminster Museum and Archives has a 16 week summer employment 
opportunity which will run from May 6^th to August 23^rd . Please note 
that staffing of this position is conditional on the approval of our 
grant application by the Young Canada Works program.

Our successful candidate is someone with a career interest in museum 
work with a specialty in education, exhibition design or curatorial work 
who is looking to gain experience for a future position as an education 
curator, exhibit preparator or exhibition curator and has an interest in 
Canadian history and material culture. This summer placement is a 
practical and hands-on learning opportunity which will provide an 
opportunity for creativity, graphic design and artistic interpretation.

Your primary role and objectives will be to:
- Assist with the creation and installation of a temporary exhibit;
- Assist with the development, testing and implementation of programs, 
including the revamping of some existing programs;
- Assist with special events at the Museum and archives and relating to 
the City’s 150^th Birthday;
- Help the Assistant Curator with the collection inventory;
- Help the Assistant Curator with basic preservation tasks; and
- Perform other related duties.

Requirements include:

    * Please note that in order to apply you must be registered in the
      Young Canada Works inventory at www.youngcanadaworks.ca
      <http://www.youngcanadaworks.ca/> and that you must be between the
      ages of 16 and 30. You must also have been a full-time student in
      the semester preceding the YCW job and intent to return to
      full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job. Priority
      will be given to candidates who have not previously participated
      in a summer work experience program.
    * In addition, we may give preference to someone who has completed
      at least one year of study in history, anthropology or education
      at a recognized university.
    * Preference may be given to those with previous work or volunteer
      experience in a museum.
    * You should be familiar with the theory and principles of museum
      operations.
    * You must have the ability to work co-operatively, as part of a team.
    * You possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
    * An aptitude for research and writing.
    * You are an organized individual who pays close attention to detail.
    * You are proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of products and
      have experience working with a variety of databases.
    * You are able to pass and maintain a criminal record background check.


This position offers an hourly rate of $15.31 plus 12% in lieu of benefits.
