Expanded Fraser River Discovery Centre Re-Opens March 28th !
New Westminster, BC - On Saturday March 28th from 1 to 4pm the Fraser River
Discovery Centre will be celebrating its Grand Re-Opening after a renovation
that tripled its size to 17,000 square feet. Members of the public are
invited to join the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers in the
re-opening celebrations.
The day will include prizes, puppet shows, fish painting, and a Discovery
Zone where children and adults can learn about animals living in the Fraser
River Basin by exploring pelts and skulls. Kla-how-eya Aboriginal Centre
will be holding a salmon BBQ, G&F Financial Group will be providing popcorn
and there will be cake. A number of dignitaries will also be speaking,
including Wayne Wright, mayor of New Westminster, Chief Rhonda Larrabee of
the Qayqayt First Nation and Yonah Martin, member of the Canadian senate.
The Fraser River Discovery Centre began in 1986 when a group of volunteers
came together with an idea to create an interpretive centre about the Fraser
River. In 1989 the Fraser River Discovery Centre Society was established as
a not for profit organization and ten years later a Preview Centre opened up
along the New Westminster boardwalk. Renovation and expansion of the preview
centre started in 2007, with a $2 million Canada/BC Infrastructure grant
matching the $1 million raised by the Discovery Centre's Founding Patrons.
The Executive Director of the Fraser River Discovery Centre, Catherine
Ouellet-Martin, credits the dedication of Fraser River Discovery Centre
Society, the Founding Patrons and the many staff and volunteers "who have
worked so hard to get to this point. This centre is the result of the dream,
vision and hard work of many dedicated individuals and groups. It is
thrilling to finally open the doors and share the dream with the public."
With the renovations complete, the Discovery Centre now includes a renovated
theatre, two floors of exhibit space and a dedicated room for school
programmes.
The first floor of the Discovery Centre will be opening on March 28th and
features all new exhibits including Written in the Earth on loan from the
Musqueam First Nation, Forests of the Future on loan from The Exploration
Place in Prince George and Birds of Prey, a bilingual exhibition designed
and produced by the Royal BC Museum and created with financial assistance
from the Department of Canadian Heritage, Government of Canada.
Ouellet-Martin is sure that "visitors will be surprised at all that the new
centre has to offer. The preview centre did an amazing job with education
programming and that will continue of course, but the expanded centre offers
so many more possibilities for great exhibits and engaging programming that
can truly do justice to the Mighty Fraser. The River is so important to BC,
it is most appropriate to have a centre that can honour and celebrate its
diverse history, people, environment and industries."
