FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The White Rock Museum + Archives presents
the underwater photography of Carole Valkanier
What lies below the waters of Boundary Bay? Join us at the White Rock Museum
+ Archives on Saturday, June 6 at 2 pm for a peek beneath the waves with
renowned underwater photographer Carole Valkanier.
Born and raised in Alberta, Carole had a great fear of water since
childhood. However, enrolling in an adult swim class called "Aquatics
Anonymous" (for scared-y-cat adults) at age 35, she worked her way from
learning to put her face in water to instructor and lifeguard, and then
through thirteen scuba levels.
Carole considers herself privileged in being able to experience the
underwater realm and began underwater photography in 1991. British Columbia,
considered by Jacques Cousteau to have the best cold-water diving in the
world, serves as inspiration for Carole's underwater images.
Having a deep sensitivity to this hidden wilderness, she conveys her
personal perceptions of our fragile underwater environment. In this regard
she has participated in underwater photography for many marine research
projects, such as: the Underwater Archaeological Society of BC, Marine
Ecology Station in Sidney, the Vancouver Aquarium, Artificial Reef Society
of BC, and Reef Environmental Education Foundation. Her award-winning
photographs have been shown in exhibitions and published in magazines
including Canadian Camera, Oggi (Japan), Diver Magazine, and others. Carole
has also been guest speaker with her slide essays at the national "Canada
Camera Conference", at the Fredericton (New Brunswick) Photographic Society,
and at various groups around British Columbia.
Carole's presentation will follow our regular touch-tank session with the
live creatures in our exhibit Seaquarium from 1 to 2 pm. Admission is by
donation. Tea and coffee will be served. The White Rock Museum + Archives is
located at 14970 Marine Drive, on the historic White Rock waterfront.
