[BCMA] Nanaimo Art Gallery 900 Fifth Street location presents "Upstairs at Wah Lee's"

The Nanaimo Art Gallery, campus location, 900 Fifth Street presents:
"Upstairs at Wah Lee's" a Quesnel Museum Travelling Exhibition, 

curated by Faith Moosang. 

 

The exhibition consists of 30 framed photographs, which were digitally
printed from glass plate negatives created by 

Quesnel's first professional photographer Chow Shong (C.S.)Wing. Wing was
born in Quesnel, B.C. circa 1890 into a merchant 

family that ran the Wah Lee Store. As a young man he established a
photographic studio on the upper floor of the store. 

He began to take photographs of the townspeople in around 1907 ad continued
until the 1920's. 

 

His portraits of local residents of the frontier town which prospered
through boom and bust cycles in the gold mining era, 

speak profoundly of the economic, religious and social forces of
acculturation at work, but also reflect a casual intimacy 

that existed between individuals of diverse cultural background.

The faces attest to the significant presence of the Chinese and First
Nations population but the clothing and props document 

that the conventions of the Caucasian population dominated. The small town
was intensely multicultural. This exhibition runs 

from November 20 to December 19th, 2009. Opening reception is scheduled for
Friday, November 20th from 5:00-7:00pm.
