The Japanese Canadian National Museum (JCNM) requires an Education
Coordinator to plan and offer educational programs for youth/. /The JCNM
is part of National Nikkei Museum & Heritage Centre, a multi-use
facility in Burnaby, BC. The Centre's mandate is to promote a better
understanding and appreciation by all Canadians of Japanese Canadian
culture and heritage; and awareness by all Canadians of the contribution
of Japanese Canadians to Canadian society, through public programs,
exhibits, services, publications, public use of the facilities and
special events.
*Position Summary:*
Reporting to the Director-Curator, the *Education Coordinator* oversees
all aspects of the Learning Centre, education and school programs at the
JCNM, including some fundraising, promotional and general administrative
work. This is a temporary part-time contract averaging 20 hours/week for
12 months (January - December), with the potential to be renewed.
Responsibilities:
· School Tours: conduct school tours, communicate with teachers for
bookings, coordinate
volunteer presentations.
· Fundraising: work with the Director-Curator to investigate and
prepare applications for
grants, sponsorship and donation opportunities for
Education programs.
· Production: manage educational exhibit and resources.
· Staff: supervise researchers, instructors, workshop leaders,
volunteers.
· Programs: oversee production of resource kits, family history
display, and other programs.
· Promotion: oversee publicity and promotion of education programs. **
· Administration: provide advice on budgets, programs and procedures
related to the **
Education programs. **
Qualifications:
· Minimum Bachelors degree related to education, museum studies,
history or related experience
· Strong verbal and written communication skills.
· Ability to work well without supervision.
· Experience with supervising staff and volunteers.
· Ability to work within budgets.
· Ability to work with tight deadlines.
· Strong familiarity with basic computer programs (excel, word) and
high comfort level with email and the web.
· Knowledge of Canadian and local history.
Assets:
· Experience with, or understanding of, local school systems.
· Advanced knowledge of computers and/or the web.
· Knowledge of Japanese Canadian history.
· Knowledge of artifact care and handling practices.
· Ability to speak and read Japanese.
