Historic Vancouver films show for first time
Films from the City of Vancouver Archives' holdings dating back to 1926
and digitized at high resolution will be shown on a big screen for the
first time:
When: Sunday, November 29 at 2 pm
Where: Vancity Theatre
1181 Seymour Street
Two of the films were found in a time capsule removed from the Sunset
Memorial Centre before it was demolished: a newsreel of Bing Crosby's
visit to Vancouver in 1948 to raise funds for the Sunset Memorial
Centre, and a film showing the construction of the original centre in
1949. The time capsule was not opened until 2008.
Other rare footage includes home movies of Eric Hamber, former
Lieutenant-Governor of BC; World War I flying ace Albert Earl Godfrey
taking off in his plane from the Royal Canadian Air Force base at
Jericho Beach in 1928; and things to do in Stanley Park in the 1930s and
1940s.
Screening will be accompanied by a live musical performance.
Presentations will be made by local film producer/historian Rick
Schmidlin (Touch of Evil, Greed ), Leslie Mobbs, City of Vancouver
Archivist and Director, Records and Archives Division and Sue Bigelow,
Digital Conservator with the City of Vancouver.
