Ten Years: Okanagan Military Museum

This Remembrance Day marked the ten year anniversary of the Okanagan
Military Museum.

Opened in 1999 by the Okanagan Military Museum Society, with Bishop
Fraser Barry and Mayor Walter Gray in attendance, the original museum
consisted of one exhibit hall, a small library, and artefact storage, all upstairs
in the Memorial Arena.

Throughout the years the museum has seen many temporary exhibitions,
several renovations, including one that doubled exhibition space, and
constant development of new public programs and community partnerships.
Honourary Patrons BC Lieutenant-Governors Garde Gardom, Iona
Campagnola and Steven Point, numerous guest speakers, and
representatives from our sister city, Veendam have visited. In 2006 the
Okanagan Military Museum became one of the four museums overseen by
the Kelowna Museums Society.

The tenth year has been a busy one, with a wide variety of events taking
place.

In addition to our regular work on both temporary and permanent exhibitions,
we hosted Chief of Defence Staff, General Natynczyk, the Canadian
Aviation Artists Association conference with special guest speaker Stephane
Guevremont, and the Memory Project team who was on site recording the
stories of local veterans. On November 11, 2009, after Remembrance Day
cenotaph ceremonies, 150 visitors attended the Okanagan Military
Museum's annual open house and tenth anniversary celebration. Happy
anniversary and here's to the next ten years!

personal equipment displays, slide shows, and geological research."
