The Centre for Policy Studies on Culture and Communities Welcomes 
Visiting Scholar Dr. Dawn Bennett, October-December 2009 



Dr. Dawn Bennett is a Senior Research Fellow at Australia´s Curtin 
University, conducting research into the working lives and economic 
circumstances of the creative workforce. She holds postgraduate 
degrees in education and music performance and has worked as a 
classical musician, educator, researcher and manager. Her research 
focuses on sustainable practice within the creative industries, with 
special emphasis on the effectiveness of education, training and 
policy. Some specific areas of interest include: 

· The effectiveness of initial and lifelong education and 
training in preparing and supporting cultural practitioners in their 
pursuit of sustainable careers 

· The working lives of creative practitioners 

· Artist academics and the impact of ERA (Australia´s higher 
education research framework) 

· The structure of the cultural/creative industries and 
associated labor market 

· Perceptions of self-identity and `success´ amongst creative 
practitioners and artists working in academia 

· The culture of the orchestral workplace 

· Gendered music careers 


Dr. Bennett will be in residence at the CPCC from October through 
December, during which time she will be building connections with 
Canadian music organizations and individuals with similar research 
interests. Dr. Bennett will share her recent work at the CPCC´s 
November Cultural Research Salon.
