[BCMA] Communicating Through Exhibitions: upcoming Cultural Resource Management Program course at UVic

COMMUNICATING THROUGH EXHIBITIONS
HA 488C (1.5 units); on-campus offering
November 2 - 7, 2009

Exhibitions shape the messages and values that museums communicate to the public. In this 6-day intensive course, you will explore the role of exhibitions in the museum context and examine the key elements involved in planning relevant and meaningful exhibitions. You will also gain experience in planning an exhibition through participation in a group assignment.

This course will:

*        Describe the evolving role of exhibitions in the museum context

*        Understand exhibitions as a medium of communication

*        Define the main issues and steps inherent in each exhibition planning stage

*        Identify the expertise needed to plan an exhibition and the roles of key team members

*        Consider the characteristics of visitors, their needs and learning styles

*        Recognize the factors that produce a successful exhibition

*        Gain exhibit planning experience

Fee: CAD$652, including a CAD$70 materials fee (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit participation options). A CAD$170 registration deposit is required with each registration form

Instructor Ruth Freeman, a Partner of Blue Sky Design, is an interpretive planner with over twenty-five years of experience in the museum field. She was Coordinator of the Discovery Gallery, and then Chief Interpretive Planner at the Royal Ontario Museum during a period of major expansion of the galleries. In her recent work as a consultant, she has planned dozens of exhibitions for museums in Canada, the United States and Ireland. These projects, of varying scope and subject matter, include exhibition master plans, permanent galleries, travelling exhibitions, and informal learning experiences for museum visitors.
