Artists from the Comox Valley are invited to participate in the Comox Valley
Art Gallery's salute to the 2010 Olympics - the first ever Mail Art Olympix.
They will join over 250 artists from 28 countries in what is probably the
largest (in number of artists) art exhibition in BC history. The deadline
for entries is October 22nd. The exhibition takes place in the public
Gallery from November 14 - December 31st.
Artists can enter in three categories: a 2 dimensional self portrait no
larger than 8 1/2 x 11 inches; artistamps (including designs for stamps or
sheets of stamps) again up to 8 1/2 x 11 inches; and artist manifestos.
Entries should be submitted by mail and many have been sent inside of
uniquely decorated envelopes. Entry forms are available from the CVAG
reception area.
Self portraits are a fascinating traditional theme for artists. We have
already received over 250 in a huge variety of mediums. Artistamps are faux
stamps created by artists. They usually appear as a repeated image,
mimicking postage stamps, on a sheet of paper often created using a graphic
arts program. Artists may submit sheets and the gallery will perforate them.
A manifesto is a public declaration of intention, purpose or principles. For
this exhibition, manifestos may be about art, mail art, art and politics, or
any other subject which artists feel strongly about. Many of the submissions
have arrived in colourful envelopes decorated with ink and watercolour,
collages, rubber stamps, and artist made stamps. These envelopes will also be
displayed in the gallery.
Royston's Ed Varney is the guest curator for this exhibition, he is one of
Canada's major Mail Art and artistamp exponents. He has been exchanging art
through the mail with other artists throughout the world for over 30 years.
He is very interested in getting local artists in the community involved in
this celebration of art and ideas.
For submission forms, visit the CVAG at Duncan and 6th in downtown
Courtenay across from the library. For more info, checkout our website
www.comoxvalleyartgallery.com or phone 250-338-6211. There is no charge to
enter your artworks.
Send your art works to the Mail Art Olympix, 4426 Island Highway South,
Courtenay, BC, V9N 9T1.

Vancouver Art Gallery unveils Olympic plans
Marsha Lederman, The Globe and Mail, Friday, October 1, 2009
Visitors to the Vancouver Art Gallery during the 2010 Winter Olympics will
be exposed to a wide range of British Columbian art at a comprehensive
survey of B.C. paintings, photographs and sculptures.
Visions of British Columbia: A Landscape Manual will feature works by B.C.
artists ranging from Emily Carr, B.C. Binning and Bill Reid to contemporary
artists such as Jeff Wall, Stan Douglas and Brian Jungen.
"We should be presenting those artists to the world, because they're so
internationally significant," says VAG director Kathleen Bartels, who
announced the exhibition yesterday. "I think it's critically important."
The gallery will also exhibit anatomical drawings by Leonardo da Vinci
during the Olympic and Paralympic Games with Leonardo da Vinci: The
Mechanics of Man. This marks the first time this group of drawings has been
exhibited in its entirety. "That body of work hasn't been shown outside of
Windsor Castle in 500 years," says Bartels.
The gallery will complement Leonardo's drawings with Visceral Bodies, an
exhibition of contemporary art based on the human form.
Visions of British Columbia runs from Jan. 23 to April 18, 2010 and Leonardo
da Vinci runs from Feb. 6 to May 2, 2010.
