Launch and Celebration
of Native Youth Art Workshops
Kamloops Art Gallery is thrilled to announce the launch of a suite of
elaborate collaborative paintings and a CD of spoken word and original
music produced during the past two and a half years within Native Youth
Art Workshops held at the Gallery and other locations in the Thompson
Nicola Regional District. The launch and workshop series wrap-up
celebration take place at the Gallery on Saturday, October 24, 2009 from
3 to 5 pm. Admission is free and everyone is invited.
Over 170 native youths from the TNRD participated in various
collaborative workshop productions. The workshop series was
co-coordinated and facilitated by artists and sisters Meeka and Victoria
Morgan, musician Rob Hall and lead artist/initiator/coordinator Jayce
Salloum. Works from the workshops form elements of the exhibition Jayce
Salloum: history of the present (selected works 1985-2009), which shows
at KAG from October 25, 2009 to January 3, 2010, before travelling
across Canada. In Kamloops, the Native Youth Art Workshop CD and
paintings are presented in the main exhibition space at the Gallery,
where the paintings can be viewed from the public courtyard area.
The workshops have attracted not only youth but elders and children from
across the region. Their many perspectives and influences are reflected
in expansive collaborative canvases incorporating intertwining themes,
ideas and artistic styles. The CD produced contains 17 tracks of
material including hip hop tunes and other songs, poetry, spoken word
and stories. It was mixed by local musician and guest artist Geo (George
Ignace) and mastered by Ashcroft-based producer John MacArthur Ellis.
The CD is available, along with an accompanying booklet, from The
Gallery Store. 100% of proceeds from CD sales will go to First Nations
youth arts programs. (For more details about the workshops see Sue Buis'
article "Native Art & Soul" in the August/September 2009 issue of
Currents magazine.)
The CD launch and the wrap-up celebration precede the opening of the
exhibition Jayce Salloum: history of the present (selected works
1985-2009), which is curated by Jen Budney, former KAG curator and now
Associate Curator at Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The
exhibition is co-produced by Kamloops Art Gallery, Mendel Art Gallery
and Confederation Centre Art Gallery, and supported financially by the
Audain Foundation and the Museums Assistance Program, Department of
Canadian Heritage. Jayce Salloum, born and raised in Kelowna, and now
based in Vancouver, has produced work and exhibited internationally for
three decades.
After the CD launch and wrap-up celebration, and in conjunction with the
exhibition, there will be an Artist and Curator's Tour with Jayce
Salloum and Jen Budney from 5:30 to 6:15 pm. Salloum and Budney will
discuss the works in the exhibition and answer your questions. Admission
is free.
The exhibition is sponsored in Kamloops by Simmons, Black & Emsland
Insurance Services. The media sponsor is CBC Radio One.
