A premier screening of a new film, "More Stories from Westbank First
Nation Women" will be held at the Mary Irwin Theatre at the Rotary
Centre for the Arts on Saturday October 24 at 7pm. This documentary film
runs 28 minutes and is appropriate for viewers of all ages.
Locally produced by award winning media artist Rick Sagayadan, the film
has been integrated into an educational resource which has been
nominated for an award of merit through the BC Museums Association. The
film follows four generations of women from the same family.
The film focuses primarily on the late Elizabeth Lindley and her
daughter Roxanne; both of whom carry the wisdom of traditional and
cultural practices as well as Indigenous plants and medicines.
Elizabeth passed on shortly after the film was made. "She rarely gave
interviews and when she saw the film, she loved it! She watched it
several times and it brought tears to her eyes" said Westbank First
Nation Cultural Researcher, Gayle Liman.
The film celebrates the strength and fortitude of First Nation women,
many of whom have faced the challenges of raising families while trying
to make a living under extreme circumstances. The women's joy and sense
of humour make this a very special story. What we learn from this film
is that regardless of what has happened, Aboriginal women have held on
to their culture, while maintaining a sense of dignity.
This film gives voice to an underrepresented demographic in Canada and
British Columbia and as such creates a unique opportunity to experience
lived stories that all too often go unheard. It speaks to the fact that
Indigenous women are vital to maintaining cultural and traditional
practices within their communities.
"I believe that we are coming into a time when the voice of women will
cross cultures, transcend stereotypes and collaboratively express
renewed and holistic views of creativity, sustainability and peace" says
Liman.
All members of the public are welcomed to attend this free film
presentation which will be followed by Aboriginal food and drinks served
downstairs at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art. The screening
is a co presentation of the Westbank First Nation and the Alternator.
