Regarding the last sentence in the reply below. I meant 'quality' =20
and I am glad that Colin would make the same choice as I. The need =20
for preservation of our material culture might be considered a first =20=
priority for museums. The number of visitors would rate lower. This =20=
is reflected in places like Lascaux as Colin rightly pointed out. =20
This ability to insure the survival of all that we hold most important =20=
in society could be a major and compelling reason for taxpayer =20
support. This is only true if we are doing this and doing it right =20
(museum standards).
I might also add that the preservation and protection of our material =20=
culture is not possible as a private enterprise. Just as public =20
safety (police) is not possible as a private enterprise it must be =20
funded and supported by the community as a whole and 'owned' and by =20
the community as a whole. For example in the US it is unthinkable =20
that the original US Constitution would be in the control of any =20
private enterprise just as it is assumed that the cost of its =20
preservation would be guaranteed by the people of the Nation that =20
considers this an important example of the material culture of the =20
nation.
