The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to present the work of Ontario-based
artist Martin Pearce with his exhibition entitled */This Was a Place/*,*
*from September 5 to November 1, 2009.

Pearce is a painter who also has a practice in drawing, which will be
the focus of this installation of recent works. A grid of twenty
drawings based on the industrial suburbs of Montreal will be included,
as well as a ten-foot-long fanciful drawing of invented cities. The
Quebec works all began with a photo-transfer of a found photograph of
the selected scene, then the artist worked into this armature with both
ink and conté, as well as erasure, and created free-form works, some of
which are barely recognizable as representational images. The imagery in
the ten-foot long cities-themed work exists more in the realm of
invented fantasy, in which a world of small installations or towns
occupy a shifting and disjointed landscape, so that our eye cannot
journey across the long sheet of paper without encountering a rupture of
one kind or another.

Martin Pearce received his MA in painting from the Royal College of Art
in London, England in 1985, and is currently an Assistant Professor in
Painting at the University of Guelph, in Guelph, Ontario. Pearce has an
extensive solo and group exhibition history in galleries across Canada.

This exhibition runs from Sept 5 to Nov 1, 2009. The Kelowna Art
Gallery, located at 1315 Water Street is open Tuesday to Saturday from
10 am to 5 pm, Thursday until 9 pm, Sunday from 1 pm to 4 pm, closed
Mondays.

Admission to the gallery is $5 for individuals, $4 for students and
seniors and $10 for a family. *FREE* admission on Thursdays from 3 – 9 pm.
