The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is pleased to announce an exciting learning opportunity that will take place this June in Lousibourg, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Transforming Cultural Organizations to Build Sustainable Communities<https://www.uvcs.uvic.ca/aspnet/Course/Detail/?code=HA488H003>  is a six-day intensive course that can be taken for credit in the CRM Program, or non-credit for professional development.

Transforming Cultural Organizations to Build Sustainable Communities

Transforming Cultural Organizations to Build Sustainable Communities explores how cultural organizations can transform their purpose and operations to work collaboratively with their communities toward a more sustainable future. Using the developing partnership between the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site and the Town of Louisbourg as a working model, participants will learn about the theory and practice of community engagement and take part in an actual community gathering.  Key findings will be reviewed on organizational change, transformation, development, and learning, teams and group dynamics, transformational leadership, competing values, everyday creativity, and interpretive programs as a transformative force. The course includes a preparatory component, including advance reading and an assignment, and a follow up post-course reflection and dialogue.

Through this course, participants will:

 *   be immersed in an authentic, in-progress  engagement model between an organization and a community.

 *   learn key elements of organizational change and approaches to collaborating with community.

 *   gain a basic understanding of community cultural development, their key characteristics, and needs.

 *   build capacity to approach communities in a manner that gains their respect through inclusion and serves community as well as organizational needs and objectives.

Registration Deadline: May 17, 2010, late registrations accepted if space permits

Fee: $657, including a $75 materials fee (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit participation options). A $175 registration deposit is required with each registration form, with the tuition balance of $487 due on or before the first day of the course. (Please note that tuition costs are subject to a slight increase in May 2010.)

Instructor: Dr. Candace Tangorra Matelic is a museum consultant with over three decades of experience in interpretation, public programming, and leadership for historical organizations. She has developed her skills in interpretive master planning, interpretive training, and organizational development through 25 years of museum experience at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, Mission Houses Museum, and Historic St. Mary's City. Candace has taught widely in museum studies and was the director of the Cooperstown Graduate Program. Currently, Candace works as a consultant focusing on organizational development and museum interpretation. She has also been involved in several professional organizations, served as a grants reviewer, and has presented at numerous conferences and workshops. She holds a PhD in organizational studies an M.A. in History Museum Studies and a B.A. in Fine Arts.
