The War to end all Wars has lost it's last Canadian link.
With the passing on February 18th of John Babcock, Canada's last veteran
soldier of WWI, the Penticton Museum will be hosting a special
commemorative event on April 9th titled 'Valour Remembered' in the
museum/library auditorium from 1pm - 4pm. This day has also been
designated by the Canadian Government as Vimy Ridge Day, in honour of
John Babcock's death and the 93rd anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
The 'Valour Remembered' event will feature the participation of up to ten
local residents who will be speaking about family members who served
during World War One. Their stories will be accompanied by cherished
artifacts, souvenirs and letters handed down over the generations to form a
bond between the past and the present. The public is invited to share in
these memoirs and watch some accompanying documentaries that explain
the historical importance of the War to End all Wars.
Some of the artifacts include a sweater worn by Syd Kenyon during his
escape from prison of war camp; salvaged keys from Ypres Cathedral;
letters home from the front; Medals of Valour from a number of veterans and
various battlefield souvenirs. The Penticton Museum and Archives will be
making an archival videotape of all the memories-and memorabilia-at the
event in order to keep alive the memory of local veterans and the sacrifices
they made.
