I was looking for a reference to this a couple of weeks ago in the hopes to see if it was backed by research. I did find it used in some articles about design (with no references) and came across a couple of Beverly Serrell articles in proceedings from Visitor Studies conferences. Although not explicitly referred to as "streakers, skimmers, studiers" she tests the concept in the first paper and then questions the use of categorizing visitors in this way in the second paper.
You can find both of them on the Visitor Studies: Theory, Research and Practice archive page
Becker, Barbara; Serrell, Beverly (1991). Stuffed Birds on Sticks: Plans to Re-Do the Animal Halls at Field Museum. Visitor Studies, 3(1), 263-269.
Serrell, Beverly (1994). The Question of Visitor Styles. Visitor Studies, 6(1), 48-53.
If anyone finds other research addressing this I'd be interested in hearing about it.
Cheers
Lisa McIntosh
