The Creston Museum is bringing back the Box Social!
What's a box social, you ask?
Well, you might have seen them in movies or plays set in pioneer times
(Oklahoma! is a good example). People bring decorated gift boxes to a
picnic, the boxes get auctioned off amidst jokes and laughter, everyone has
a good meal and a great time, and a few dollars get raised for the
organisation hosting the picnic.
Traditionally, the meals are in the boxes being auctioned off. But
modern-day health regulations have a few issues with that, so the Museum is
changing things up just a little bit.
The "picnic" will be a barbecue with hamburgers, hotdogs, salads, corn on
the cob, and ice cream, available for just a few dollars. And the boxes
will be a wide assortment of gift boxes containing all sorts of edibles and
non-edibles: a quilters' stash, a crate of heritage tomatoes, some homemade
jams and jellies, and "something to do with books" are amongst the boxes
lined up so far.
Members of the Museum's board of directors and local organisations are being
invited to bring in a box. For the organisations, it's a fun and very
unique opportunity to showcase what they do. Members of the public are also
more than welcome to bring a box - the only restriction is that the contents
can't be something that will spoil during the Box Social.
Of course, the "box" doesn't have to be a box specifically - any container
that suits the gift is fine.
"We've got Joe Snopek lined up to handle the auction, we're working on the
entertainment, and of course there will be prizes for the most creative
boxes," says Lois Currie, one of the event's organisers. "It'll be a fun
evening for everyone, so load up the car with your kids or your friends, and
come on down!"
Everyone knows that the best way to kick off a long weekend is with a
barbecue. And when that barbecue involves a chance to hang with old
friends, make some new ones, and get to know your community a little better,
well, that's just about perfect.
It all takes place at the Museum on Friday, September 3. The barbecue gets
fired up at 5:00 PM; the auction will start around 6:00.
