Ian Johnston: Bag Suite in 4/4 Time

Opening reception Dec 17; on view from Dec 18, 2010 to Feb 6, 2011

December 14, 2010 - Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to
welcome back Nelson-based artist Ian Johnston with a solo exhibition
entitled Bag Suite in 4/4 Time. Beautiful, yet subtle and restrained,
Bag Suite in 4/4 Time is a thought-provoking installation that allows
the viewer plenty of room in which to ruminate upon the meanings of the
work. Ian Johnston: Bag Suite in 4/4 Time is on view from December 18,
2010 to February 6, 2011.

Regular visitors to the Gallery may recall Ian Johnston's huge wall of
blue car bumpers that was included in the group show Module in the
spring of 2009. Bag Suite in 4/4 Time relies on the artist's ability
with the medium of ceramics, as he has created 500 slip-cast porcelain
vessels, using plastic shopping bags as their originating shapes. The
viewer enters the gallery and is awash in the cold glow of fluorescent
light, in which to view the repeated forms of the vessels. They are
beautiful to behold as they are neatly stacked on the metal retail
shelving that lines the gallery walls. Yet underneath this appealing
installation is a warning inherent about the sustainability of our
consumer culture, and the war now on in many parts of the planet on the
ubiquitous plastic shopping bag.

"The Reynolds Gallery has been completely transformed by Johnston's
innovative and somewhat bizarre installation of such a dense and uniform
arrangement of the repeated ceramic forms", comments Liz Wylie, Curator
at the Kelowna Art Gallery. "Upon entering the gallery, the viewer may
be unsure of whether they have stumbled into a retail outlet or a
medical clinic."

An opening reception to celebrate the exhibition will be held on Friday,
December 17 from 7-9 pm at the Kelowna Art Gallery. The reception is
free and open to the public, and is also being held to celebrate two
other exhibitions which open at the Gallery on the same date.

Ian Johnston: Bag Suite in 4/4 Time opens to the public on December 18,
2010 and is on view through February 6, 2011. The Kelowna Art Gallery is
located at 1315 Water Street in the heart of the Cultural District in
Downtown Kelowna. For hours of operation or more information about

Jasmine Reimer: 1000 lbs. 3 Days

Opening reception Dec 17; on view from Dec 18, 2010 to June 12, 2011

December 14, 2010 - Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Art Gallery announces the
opening of the most recent in our Dysfunctional Chairs exhibition
series. Vancouver-based artist Jasmine Reimer may strike a chord with
those who are subjected to sitting long hours in uncomfortable office
chairs in her installation 1000 lbs. 3 Days, on view from December 18,
2010 to June 12, 2011 in the Rotary Courtyard at the Kelowna Art
Gallery.

In this exhibition, the artist explores the virtual colonization of the
corpulent, strained body by the standard office chair. Using fragments
of discarded office chairs and sand-filled fabric forms in her
installation, the artist shows how some people's bodies suffer and
succumb to the stress under which they are placed day after day. In
Reimer's installation, however, she delves into the situation with an
eye to its complexities. One may ask the question: is the chair really
the problem, or is it a symptom of a larger dysfunction within society?
1000 lbs. 3 Days draws light to the plight of office clerks cast in the
role as drones, selling their productivity to their employer at the
expense of their health.

"The Dysfunctional Chairs series is part of the Kelowna Art Gallery's
on-going mandate to commission though-provoking works by contemporary
Canadian artists", says Liz Wylie, Curator at the Kelowna Art Gallery.
"The chair is an inherently human object, and office work is part of
many people's lives. Reimer's work in the Dysfunctional Chairs series
produces an emotional response to what some would construe as an
incredibly unpleasant way to spend their workday."

An opening reception to celebrate the exhibition will be held on Friday,
December 17 from 7-9 pm at the Kelowna Art Gallery. The reception is
free and open to the public, and is also being held to celebrate two
other exhibitions which open at the Gallery on the same date.
