Digitization Assistant, Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society
One of BC's few intact canneries, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National
Historic Site commemorates the history of Canada's West Coast fishing
industry from the 1870's to the present. Located in the historic fishing
village of Steveston, and operated by the not-for-profit Gulf of Georgia
Cannery Society, the Cannery offers a variety of interpretive programs for
school groups, tourists and the general public. Its collection includes
over 10,000 artifacts, archival documents, and a research library. We are
currently seeking a Digitization Assistant to join our team.
Working with the Collections Manager, the Digitization Assistant will be
responsible for assisting with the Gulf of Georgia Cannery historic photo
digitization project.
Responsibilities will include:
?scanning the historic photo collection, updating cataloguing entries and
burning CDs of images
?compiling a detailed inventory of the collection, including updating
photo reference binders, finding aids and database records
?assisting with writing photo descriptions for online database
?rehousing and conservation duties as required
Qualifications:
?familiarity with basic museum principles and practices
?an interest in pursuing a career in heritage, museums, libraries or archives
?computer skills are essential; experience working with databases an asset
?experience with scanning or other digitization procedures and with
indexing/ cataloguing an asset
?able to lift up to 20 lbs
?must be a full-time student and be returning to full-time studies in the
fall
?a criminal record check is required
This is a temporary (May 10 ? August 27, 2010) 35-hour per week position.
The salary is $12 per hour plus 4% in lieu of vacation.
