Marsh Madness at the Museum!

Cowichan – Experience the wet wonders of Somenos Marsh during Marsh Fest at
the BC Forest Discovery Centre. On Saturday, March 20, visitors are invited
to take a guided tour of the wetlands, gain insider tips for taking amazing
nature photos, and participate in fun children’s programming. “This is a
new event for us,” says Aimee Greenaway, the museum’s Program and
Collections Coordinator. “There are activities for all ages so parents and
grandparents can enjoy participating in presentations and children will have
a great time searching for marsh monsters in the portable pond.”

The presentations and tours will take place throughout the day. Local
photographer Cim MacDonald will host a workshop on taking nature photos and
follow up with a birding tour. Visitors are encouraged to bring their
cameras on the tours. Dave Polster, a plant ecologist, will host an
invasive plant workshop and marsh tour while Lynn Woodgate, native plant
expert, will provide forest tours and demonstrations. Pacific Northwest
Raptors will lead a presentation about local raptors and host a meet and
greet with some of their own raptors. After looking for marsh monsters,
children will have fun making bird feeders and riding the train.

Marsh Fest provides a unique opportunity for the community to learn more
about the wildlife and plants that live in the Somenos Lake wetlands. “Many
people are surprised to find out that the BC Forest Discovery Centre’s
property includes 40 acres of wetlands,” says Vicki Holman, Manager of the
museum. “This event will be a great time-rain or shine. It doesn’t matter
if you get wet when you are on a wetland!”

For more details and a schedule of events please visit
www.discoveryforest.com. There is a special admission rate of $5 per person
and the event is included in BCFDC memberships. The museum will be open
from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm.
